Rural wastewater primarily consists of domestic sewage and agricultural effluent. Domestic sewage contains relatively fixed components, mainly including carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, fats, and other organic substances that promote bacterial growth, creating ideal conditions for microbial and viral proliferation. However, domestic sewage generally lacks toxicity and possesses certain fertilizing properties, making it suitable for agricultural irrigation.

Agricultural wastewater contains diverse components, requiring tailored treatment methods depending on seasonal variations, geographical locations, and rural development goals. To reduce wastewater discharge volume and complexity during treatment, integrated with the national initiative promoting biogas pond construction, it’s essential to separate toilet wastewater (black water) from other domestic water (gray water). Gray water undergoes natural purification systems, while black water and livestock manure are processed through anaerobic biogas ponds. This approach not only reduces wastewater discharge volume, simplifies treatment procedures, and lowers operational costs, but also plays a crucial role in developing clean energy solutions for rural areas, protecting living environments, and promoting sustainable socio-economic development in rural regions.

Wastewater treatment plants are crucial facilities that process industrial and domestic wastewater to meet discharge standards, serving as vital environmental protection infrastructure. While such facilities are already widespread in developed countries, China’s rural areas currently have few such facilities, though their numbers are expected to grow gradually in the future. To ensure these plants function effectively, strict emission regulations, well-organized management systems, and robust administrative frameworks remain essential.
